Are You Ready to PAHTY!!
(Reprinted From Woostah.com)
Boston, MA
- Some people think they are compromising by going
with a DJ instead of a full band. But with Jimmy you can get that element
of live entertainment coupled with the thumping beat of a DJ for fun fun
dance music. First, Jimmy can play and sing during the cocktail
hour. He was lead singer/guitarist for years in one the biggest
wedding/private function bands in Massachusetts.
(click here for audio sample of Jimmy-
Just vocals/guitar solo - just as it would be - ya know not all doctored up!)
Some guests think, "Wow they have a DJ and
a private singer guitarist strolling around for the cocktail hour."
But, hee-hee it doesn't cost any extra. Second his daughter Erin is a
trained classical / Celtic flutist. For an ethereal wedding ceremony see
the web site for the Flute Guitar duo featuring Erin. And
third for a fun little after dinner show he has the Las Vegas spoof act where
he dresses up like Frank Sinatra. It is only 10 minutes and doesn't take away
from the dancing but moreover, it is a great icebreaker. This is a unique
approach to any party- the combination of DJ and a little real musical
entertainment.
Jimmy ONeil works in the broadcasting business for
WireReady Newswire. He is a Production and Systems Designer for
over 2000 Radio stations in the country including Clear Channel, Air America,
and Wall Street Journal Radio. Even Disney uses the Automation
system. Have you ever been to Disneyland and out of nowhere a little
speaker says, "The Country Bear Show will start in 20 minutes." That's
WireReady software. Radio and DJing is just in his blood and he can't
escape it. He also builds web sites for radio stations and others.
He has another business building web sites so check out
BayStateWebStudio.com if you need web help.
He wasn't always a DJ and broadcast systems builder. He
started with music in his blood. Jimmy
ONeil started playing guitar at age fourteen after seeing the Beatles on the Ed
Sullivan Show. By 1966 he was the lead singer of his first band "Satan's
Children'. (pretty scarey name, huh) They started playing
local school dances, teenage nightclubs, and played Hampton Beach Casino and
the Unicorn CoffeeHouse in Boston. If you like 60's music, just ask
him and he'll probably know it. A lot of people remember Woodstock, but
Jimmy was actually there.
In the 70's Jim had a single act playing his big acoustic
Guild 12 string guitar. He was known as the Sing-A-Long King
. He gave out more kazoos than you could ever know. (ya know
Oh Oh Carol, you're the bottom of the barrel!!!) If you ever went to Tammany
Hall, Curley's, or the Pub on Park Ave, you probably ran into Jimmy and
played a few kazoos. He played Boston, too at the Plow and Stars and Matt
Talmans. Oh and that's when he started adding his Irish bit
too. T.O. Flynn's was the place to be on St Patrick's Day with Jimmy
ONeil. But, then the drinking age went back up to 21 and the
'Happy Hour Sing-a-Longs' went away. Now what?
Private functions seemed to be a good answer. In
the 80's Jim was the leader of the Black Apple Band .
Paul Odgren on drums; Tommy Herbert on Sax; Jim Rice on keyboards; Bob
Simonelli on Bass; Tom Marshall(the Magician) on Guitar (and let's not
forget the first drummer Sue Scola) They did weddings, anniversaries, proms,
you name it and just about every Sheraton in New England. One year
they did over 180 jobs. He still remembers finishing up one afternoon
wedding at Salem Cross Inn and packing up all the equipment into the truck and
zooming down the Cape to do a high school prom at night. Oh yeah,
and they provided the sound and lighting equipment when the
Rolling Stones played Sir Morgan's Cove back then. Jim's wife, Joan ran
the big spotlight on Mick. Ask her about that some
time. Black Apple was a real good show band, but the
big bands got too expensive for the scene and eventually disc jockeys took
over. The price was right. So Jimmy said, "Can't beat 'em, then
Join 'em."
As the lead singer and EMCEE for hundreds of weddings with the
Black Apple Band going into DJing was an easy transition. He has amassed
thousands of songs. In the 90's
Jim started getting into computers. He started putting together a
massive list of songs onto his computer. (Because he works at a Radio
Production company that specializes in all that digital stuff) It is thousands
of the best songs, digitally formatted and crystal clear. So
now he has the combination of the disc jockey service and the live guitar and
vocal show he has always been doing.
And, Yes Jimmy and Erin still do their pub act once in a while
though they are very busy with the DJ and flute guitar duo private wedding
gigs. It's kind of like the old Sing a Long show from the 70's but now he
has Erin on flute and singing harmony. You can still hear them play live
songs from Jimmy Buffet to Irish pub songs to Beatles. It's a lot of fun
so keep your ear to the ground. They definitely play every St Patricks
day at the Press Box on Lincoln St in Worcester. It is packed. Bring your
kazoo.
So, for a great EMCEE who does
it all from the Grand Entrance to the Cake Cutting Jimmy has the touch.
For all the great tunes from 'Love Shack' to Louis Armstrong to Black Eyed Peas
Jimmy has the awesome thumpin' sound system. And for that live touch he
can belt out a few (and even dress up like Frank Sinatra) or play the
ceremonial music with his daughter Erin on flute. In
either case it's a lot of fun and you are in good hands when you have Jimmy
ONeil 'Awesome DJ'.
